ALGORITHMIC BIASES IN AI
This week I’ve been putting my critical digital literacy skills to use by searching for information about an internet safety issue...ALGORITHMIC BIAS IN AI
Defining algorithmic bias?
To make it easier, an algorithm is a set of steps that work towards an objective, algorithmic bias in AI occurs when said algorithm produces systematically discriminatory and unfair results to certain groups of people, it occurs because some people are excluded or underrepresented in the data used to train AI algorithms.
Algorithmic bias in AI is a major issue because, generally algorithms should make AI be fair and unbiased however that is unfortunately not the case, by highlighting the significance of this issue we can raise awareness with the population prompting the amelioration of this issue. AI bias particularly affects already disadvantaged groups such as women or ethnic minorities, a study done by scientists show that a major healthcare algorithm severely underemphasises black patients.
Cause and Effects?
The number one cause of biases that presents in AI is because of humans as they are the ones to create these algorithms, the often perpetuate and reinforce harmful stereotypes, a reflection of the humans themselves, also the lack of diversity in this field can increase this risk. The effects of this is straightforward, if not mitigated AI bias can mean people who are already vulnerable to unfairness face even more unlawful discrimination.
