This week I have been looking into how AI is impacting journalism and the potential side effects of this.
AI in journalism, what is it?
AI in journalism is what it sounds like, its the use of AI in order to write and produce articles or other journalistic pieces. In this blog and this video I will be talking to you about how AI has been used in journalism, I will discuss how AI while a useful tool is not able to capture the human essance of journalism, AI cannot talk to victums of a war on the ground, AI cannot gain the trust of a whistle blower, and AI cannot provide the human look at the facts. This last point especially is a bit of a mixed bag, as humans are bias, we all have our bias's, however these bias's are important in journalism as if just the facts are presented with no thought or nuance it can lead to people taking this information at face value, taking no background information or circumstance into consideration.
So why does this matter?
In our current day and age information is one of the most powerful things, we see it used in many ways in our soceity, as it petains to journalism people rely on journalists to not only provide the facts but also the context to these facts inorder to form an opinion. Without this context people will just take facts at face value, this can lead to troubling conclusions.
Who does this effect?
This effects everyone, people who watch the news will take the information presented to them by the AI journalist and will then spread this information, these people will be missing key aspects that are important to the information, they could talk about how there is a war happening, but they will not take into consideration what has caused the war, this could lead to a society that doesnt think about why things happen, just that they do.
